For BT, I use Azureus. For shn->wav, I use Shorten; I'd also recommend getting and using MD5Sum to verify downloads. (Note that both of those are command-line tools, so if he's not cool with typing commands in a command prompt, they might be tough to use for him.) Most programs that handle FLAC can be downloaded via this website. As well as the main FLAC tools, getting FLAC frontend is a good idea, as it makes using FLAC a lot easier. http://www.etree.org/software.html also has links to other programs which might be useful.
