Marillion? Really?

Wow, I have a relative who was married to one of those dudes in the 80s and early 90s. I have seen them live at least 10 times. Never thought I would EVER see them mentioned on here. (Haven't heard that album - my older brother no longer gets freebies from them and I've never seen it in a store...)

For a complete change of pace, I would recomment the new OPETH album Ghost Reveries. Amazing Swedish metal with strong 70s prog and folk undertones. Great players who can stretch songs out to 8+ minutes without becoming wank-offs.

If you want something more psychedelic, then Da Tet Lungt by Dungen.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah- self titled

A brilliant indie album that reminds me of Modest Mouse or Talking Heads. One of my favorite albums of the year.

The Arcade Fire EP

The first release from this epic band. I recommend this album because everyone knows of the greatness of Funeral. This self-titled debut also shows moments of brilliance but is more subdued overall.

Iron & Wine- Woman King

Anything by Iron & Wine is brilliant, but this is the most recent example of his work.

Nickel Creek-This Side

If you don't do the more mellow country/bluegrass thing, this is not for you, but it's one of the best discs that I've heard in awhile. Produced by Allison Krauss, awesome tunes, excellent sound quality.

I have been into this band for some time now, the girl has a sweet sweet voice.

Get this show if interested:

New Monsoon - "Downstream"

monsoon2.jpg

Also, I can't help but comment on Marillion as they were mentioned above...

Around 1995 or so, "Fish" was announced to be playing on Victoria Island in Hull, Quebec. A whole bunch of my fellow Ottawans (as I lived there at the time) called me to say, "It must be a typo! Phish is coming today!"

I thought it was pretty unlikely that Phish would be playing Hull, and even less likely that no one I knew was aware of it until the last second. As it happened, I had a good friend who loved Marillion, so I knew a bit about the band, and I bet everyone it was their former lead singer, "Fish".

There were a lot of disappointed hippies that day who wasted their time heading over the bridge, only to find "Fish" from Marillion, despite my comments to the contrary...

Ooo - just read the precis. Thanks - must track this down.

Paper Clips

Aie! - poking around the Union Station website, I just saw that Jerry Douglas has played on something in the neighbourhood of 1500 albums. I might have to amend the QOTD today for things I would wish to accomplish in my lifetime....
