Basher
Local article. Picture should be in the print article. Sherman dealt a full house Markham resident to play in World Series of Poker Tournament Jul 20, 2006 Mike Hayakawa, Staff Writer In this day and age you can't buy a lot with just $8. But Brian Sherman did. It recently earned the 32-year-old Markham resident a trip later this month to Las Vegas where he could return with as much as $12 million to $14 million U.S. after competing in the World Series of Poker Tournament. Sherman earned his berth by winning a tournament on PokerRoom.com The Vegas tournament runs July 28 to Aug. 10. Sherman had some reservations about entering because it lasts almost two weeks and he had six vacation days left at ATI Technologies in Markham, where he's a customer service supervisor. "My boss loves to play poker and I chatted with him about the tournament. He said 'try it, don't worry about what vacation days you have left,'" Sherman recalled. Taking his supervisor's advice, Sherman was among 33 players who competed in the first event, the $8 tournament. Placing in the top five, he advanced to the next round, a $54 tournament. Winning that event, Sherman moved on to the $650 tournament. With 17 players taking part, Sherman won it and earned the right to go to Las Vegas. It took Sherman 24 hours to qualify. "There are a lot of people who I know that have tried this but didn't make it through. It's a difficult to do. It's been tough to sleep the last few days, it's a dream come true," he said of his feat. By winning the tournament, Sherman will be part of a 67-player Team PokerRoom.com contingent. Each team member, Sherman noted, was rewarded $13,500 U.S. The financial package, he said, included the $10,000 entry buy-in along with accomodations at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino. They also received money to cover incidentals. With 10,000 players from around the world competing in the tournament, Sherman noted the game will be played in the face-to-face mode. Sherman's interest in it stemmed from the game's exposure on television. "I watch poker a lot on TV. and I look at it is an opportunity to learn," he cited. He whetted his appetite by watching an online player in Chris Moneymaker win the top prize in the 2003 World Series of Poker. "A lot of the so-called poker pros don't win. In the past three years the winners have been amateurs who play the game on the Internet." While hoping to bring home the top prize, Sherman said a top 14 or 15 finish could still net him close to $1 million U.S. To finish in the top 10 per cent, he estimated, should still enable a player to earn $12,500 U.S. "It's pretty exciting. To be in this event is definitely a dream come true," he said.

Basher
Calamity Jane, you seem to have a vested interest in my performance, almost like you invested in me. One of my "investors" was so generous that they just gave me the $100, and didn't sign or return a contract.
