  1. Nobody bats an eyelash at $89.50 to $189.50 for tickets? So the shittiest, obstructed view seats in Massey hall are worth $89.50 plus plus plus? I know that this show represents something very rare and intimate (and being filmed) but I'm so fucking tired of ridiculously overpriced concerts by aging rockers who are well past their prime. and I love Neil but gimme a fuckin break. At least Fleet Foxes is $35 - $45.
  2. I'm not on faceplant either. Seems to be something more folks here have in common. I did think about joining faceplant about a week ago. What did it was the thought of all those old people trying to figure out new technologies and just giving up and being left out of the loop, and left behind. I don't want to be an old person, using ancient tools like "email" when everyone else in the world (or so it seems) is faceplanting each other. Then I thought, naw, fuck it. We seemed to get along fine without it for several years. And no matter what, something else will be along shortly that will be the "new" cool thing and faceplant will be long forgotten. back to music.....can't wait for new My Morning Jacket and gots me my Kool Haus tickets yesterday. Fuck ya.
  3. First off, I agree that sing alongs always have their time and place and aren't at all always annoying. God only knows I've "sang along" shit loads. Jesus Etc sing along was annoying but more because I got the impression Jeff Tweddy was a) tired off singing it tired of the subtle crowd sing along, so he made an obvious crowd sing along. Second, I'm basing this on that small fundraiser or contest show that was posted online or on their website, that Jeff Tweedy played solo, where the entire audience tried to sing along to literally every song. It was a small room and a small audience but man was it annoying hearing the room try to sing with him. It wasn't drunken clowns and I have no doubt that these shows will be awesome, but for $45 a piece, I would be pissed if people attempted to sing with more than say a few songs. And I always sing along to NFA.
  4. has anyone seen a Jeff Tweddy solo show or footage of one? massively annoying sing-along.
  5. thanks man. was going to hit up Monday the 21st show but not going to happen. kinda bummed I missed this year but there's always next year assuming Greg stays healthy.
  6. For those who have recently come into possession of the new Strokes album, just wondering what fans of the band are thinking about it? Personally, I'm really enjoying it. They seem to be simultaneously doing what they do best, and breathing some new life into the Strokes formula. A great album with some great melodies and arrangements. Definitely a more evolved, developed sound and yet staying true to what makes them good. Give it a few listens, it takes a few to really open up. http://www.monova.org/torrent/4286357/The_Strokes_-_Angles_%282011%29%28320Kbit%29%28Mp3%29_TBS.html
  7. I kept waiting for them to crank it up and start kicking a bit more ass, but no. Definitely sound like a Guess Who-CCR cross breed.
  8. yes, i guess you were wrong? As was Jennifer I suppose. ticketmaster was in fact completely sold out yesterday, which was exactly what was written on collective concerts web site. So thanks to my co-worker Ed who covered for me, I sprinted to Rotate This during work, after realizing ticketmaster was sold out, and grabbed myself a pair for Friday.
  9. yeah maybe its just me or is that a tad confusing? So I get that the presale is sold out, but saying "ticketmaster is now sold out" is misleading. Are there only tickets available at horseshoe, soundscapes and rotate this and none through ticketmaster anymore at all, including tomorrow at noon? Jennifer at ticketmaster was not helpful and she failed to grasp what I was trying to say.
  10. Jazz in Radiohead? Jazz? yeah they sure swing like shit on a bunch of records. dumbest graph ever.
  11. fuck I hate phfish, the food and the band.
  12. thanks. listening to it now makes me really, really miss The Bends and OK Computer. back when they played instruments and not laptops. ok, smoked a bowl, put on the earphones, went for a walk, changed my mind. definitely better the 2nd time around and not on a stereo. and certainly more instrument driven than I initially thought.
  13. sorry wrong article. http://www.thestar.com/news/article/912423--hume-police-park-their-arrogance-for-all-to-see from this article, "In a column this week, Lakey quotes Supt. Hugh Ferguson, who runs 52 Division. He explains that the square is closed because repairs are being made to the underground garage. When it’s done, Ferguson said, we’ll stop parking in the square. The only problem is that it’s not true. For years the police have used this square as their own parking lot when it suits them. There are photographs to prove it. No one would disagree that police need to be able to park in places that would otherwise be illegal, but this is no emergency; the real issue is the personal convenience of those employed at 52 Division. However understandable — wouldn’t we all love to park wherever we felt like it — it is irritating, illegal, and worse, indicative of an institution grown complacent and so self-satisfied it is losing touch not only with those it is meant to serve, but those who pay its way." however, having read this other article, it was my misunderstanding that the reno's were already completed. Sorry, the star printed several articles about this over the holidays and I incorrectly inferred that the underground lot they use was fixed and were simply continuing to park outside. My mistake and I admit it. here's another article on the story and where the misunderstanding may have stemmed from. Its been reported that some have suggested the reno is done. They are apparently wrong. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/fixer/article/856598--the-fixer-police-cars-cramp-pedestrian-space Honestly, I could care less about where they park public space or not. And I'm not suggesting this is typical of police. There are legitimate grievances we have against the Metro police and using public space for parking is very low on that scale as far as I'm concerned. As for rants, how about $365 million for police for G20? Does the force need 4 new sound cannons? That seems like a legitimate concern.
  14. I think it would help if we had a more balanced approach to investigating and holding police accountable. Right now it seems as though police protect themselves way too much (SIU is staffed with mostly ex-police - whose interest are they representing?), and public criticism is met with much the same as we have here in the defense of police: criticize one, you're criticizing all. This is not the intent but the result of knee-jerk reaction on all sides. Outlandish behavior (police brutality) is met with criticism of the force generally when it was the actions of one or few that were unjust, and the police view a criticism of one as criticism of all. If we could separate and hold accountable the few officers who engaged in this activity, and publicly scrutinize their actions without invoking police behavior generally (which I think both sides do) maybe we could find more realistic and pragmatic solutions to police oversight. I think we mostly do a good job of walking a fine line between making sure police act according to our laws and allowing them to do the job we've tasked them with. The most useful solution is to give the SIU arms length independence and keep a vigilant watch over police activity. Not a write blank cheque for police actions because they chose to risk their lives defending us. I want them there to help me, but I want to make sure I have the tools to hold them accountable - as someone said earlier, great power, great responsibility. As far as paintbrushes are concerned, I wonder how its possible for Metro Toronto Police to be demonstrably racist when it comes to pulling over visible minorities (so-called "driving while black") and we not use a wide paintbrush to draw attention to this? If this was the behavior of a few bad apples, why then does the polices own stats show similar behavior across the board? This isn't one cruiser pulling over 50 black youth in cars every day, this is SYSTEMATIC pulling over of black youth in cars for NO reason other than being black. And I'm not making this stat up, as you may recall the police sued the Toronto Star over the article series and lost as the Star demonstrated it was the polices own statistics that proved this.
  15. It seems obvious to me from an outsiders point of view that, like the military, cops look out and protect one another in an extremely tight-knit fraternal way. They're protecting one another from outside scrutiny, which by the nature of the job (risking life) they feel entitled to. In other words, if I'm going to risk my life protecting the public (and strangers at that), don't ask questions about my methods. I agree there are probably huge amounts of tolerance and collusion between officers with regard to "unbecoming" activities that police engage in. Which is exactly why they don't speak out about it. What happens in the force stays in the force or some such nonsense. Also, consider the massive ostracism that must occur when a cop decides to speak out (or up) about police activities. That's usually enough for most people to look the other way. Or perhaps cops take care of it themselves code Red style?
  16. Higher standards for cops are absolutely necessary, do they exist? http://www.thestar.com/opinion/editorials/article/882725--siu-cases-unequal-justice-for-the-police The Toronto Star published an article almost 2 years ago that showed according to their own stats Metro Police are racist when it comes to who they pull over. Police brutality is still a common occurrence across this country and should not be swept under the rug. However, cops that engage in this are almost always the minority and we should not rush to pass judgment on the whole force. BUT, that doesn't mean we shouldn't remain questioning and skeptical about police activity. Hold them to that standard and maybe give the SIU just a bit more independence. here's another example of police arrogance on a more simple matter of public space. http://www.thestar.com/news/fixer/article/910608--the-fixer-no-overtime-parking-tickets-for-police-cars Police are doing what most of us refuse to and cannot do, police ourselves. I want that cop out there protecting me, but I also want oversight and accountability for that level of authority I've given them. At the moment in Toronto, I don't think that accountability and oversight are AS effective as they could be. And let's make no mistake, being a cop attracts a certain type personality and unfortunately leads to ridiculous (and obvious) abuses of power - see G20, FTAA Quebec City, being black or Native in Canada.
  17. Samsung all the way! top marks for quality and picutre - but LCD is damn fragile, when it breaks its done, there's no fixing a broken LCD screen. consider alternatives to LCD. sony is also good.
  18. The Simpson's go to Britain Homer Simpson: "Oh look, there goes Jimmy Page, the greatest thief of American black music that ever lived."
  19. At first I thought there was far too much smoke being blown up Jack Whites ass than deserved. But the fact the White Stripes are considered mainstream says a lot about how every once in awhile, popular music can have a shit load of integrity and get it right. His output is ridiculous and although I don't love the Stripes the man is undeniably a huge talent and will be listened to for decades.
  20. http://arts.nationalpost.com/2011/02/02/the-white-stripes-announce-split/ from the post.... Remember back in, like, 2001, when all these bands with “The†in their name broke onto the scene and everyone was really excited about the return of good rock music or whatever? We remember that time rather fondly, which is why today’s news that brother-sister ex-husband/wife duo The White Stripes are no more makes us very sad. There’s still a new Strokes album coming out this year, right? According to a bulletin posted on the band’s official website, Jack and Meg aren’t sick or fighting or anything like that — they just want to end on a high note: “[The breakup] is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.†The notice on the website also promises that live and previously unreleased material will be released under Jack White’s Third Man Records imprint. The silver lining, of course, is that now we can all look forward to the reunion gig at Coachella 2015.
  21. do they employ the skills of a talented laptopist? nothing says live music like a laptopist.
  22. no, that was the funny/weird part. All you had to do was walk up to the ticket booth(it was outside the gaming floor next to the theatre entrance) and ask the person to sign up for the club card. you fill the form out, provide ID, and they give you a card. We weren't sure how to broach the "can I have free tickets to the show?" question but the people working there seemed to already know and she just asked me straight up, "how many tickets would you like for the show? (the allmans who had just started) I didn't have to ask and I certainly hadn't gambled, I had come straight from the parking lot. So it didn't matter at that moment that I hadn't gambled at Rama at all. It was an undersold show and club card members were getting free tickets (and signing up for card was free). which is why I'm curious about walking in this Friday afternoon not having been back since and seeing about freebies to Lyle and John.
  23. A few people on this board will recall the whole thing about how if you signed up for the Casino Rama players club card you got free tickets to concerts.....a bunch of us myself included did this for the allmans show there a few years back. Question: since I'm now a member of the players club and haven't been back since, what are my chances of showing up this Friday (Feb. 4th) for the Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt show and getting free tickets again with my card/membership? thoughts?
