edger
Suddenly I seem to be seeing them hanging up in the sky over powerlines everywhere! At first I figured it was just some isolated practical joke... but now I am assuming that I am just ignorant to some deeper meaning...Can someone enlighten me? bradm
I don't think there's any known definitive answer.http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a5_274.htmlAloha,Brad
Birdy
i'm pretty sure shoes on a powerline indicate some kind of gang territory.. or at least somewhere down the line i've been told that.. sketchy parts of LA have them hanging everywhere... afro poppa
I thought that if there were shoes on a powerline it was some sort of tribute to a childhood friend who had passed away?
rubberdinghy
It's a time-honored tradition to throw your sneakers over the power lines on the last day of school.yep.I used to do it with old shoes....just for the hell of it...Not sure if they are still there but there should be a pair at the corner of Maclaren and Bronson...courtesy of another board member. Calamity Jane
from bradm's link....I think this is the most likely answer:Either they're meant to increase visibility for low-flying aircraft, frighten rattlesnakes away, or just for the hell of it.anyone seen how this plays out in "Snakes On A Plane" yet??? Most likely Samuel L. Jackson just takes off his boots, ties them together and just starts whacking the bejeezus outta them slithery muthafuckas! Dr_Evil_Mouse
We just watched Big Fish again last night, and I'm sure I'll always think of the town of Specter when I see shoes on a line - Not only does it suggest how comfy the place is that you don't need shoes, but you're also prevented from leaving and hurting your feet on the cruel ground outside. phorbesie
i have a picture of a tree full of shoes, but not digital if you're ever driving from vancouver to vegas you'll see the tree somewhere in north cali (on the 395). fortunately we had some shoes to add to it! Alexis
i was told a long time ago by whom i can't remember, that a pair of shoes with the laces tied together hanging over a powerline indicates that you can buy some sort of hardcore drug (crack i think) in the near vicinity. edger
So the consensus appears to be multiple meanings...I suppose its probably a good idea to decipher the original intent before taking any further actions...Otherwise you might end up getting yourself into some interesting predicaments... nattyMatty
I haven't seen any shoes Nailed to a tree before But i have seen Fish heads nailed thru the gills...Kinda sick...Anyways The first time i saw shoes up on power lines was on Grey Road 40 for those that don't know where that is..Well you might be kinda close to it this weekend..The next place i saw them was when i pulled into the parking lot when i moved to montreal last labourday weekend. The Third is In A Movie called Big fish..It was a pretty good movie about a guy that was a Great Bullshitter, or Had an amazing life and new how to tell a story.. anyhow thats my 2 cents worth. AWeeJig
There is a shoe tree on Old Townline heading west out of Orangeville. It's been there since I can remember. A friend of mine used to have huge field parties out there and we'd stop at the shoe tree for a break on our journeys out there and on the way home. StoneMtn
I once heard a radio show on this topic. On the show, some guy did it all the time for the hell of it, as a tradition he developed as a child with his friends. No deep meaning for him.
