phishtaper Posted November 16, 2007 Report Share Posted November 16, 2007 yes, RnB, thats true. common occurance of words like molecular, ocular, perpendicular, etc. in science and mathematics led to the initial mispronunciation of nuclear as nucular as a matter of convenience based on the phonetic issue that the "cle-ar" is quite easily pronounced as "clar", which when preceded by the hard K in "nuke" obliges an extra syllable, "yoo" in this case because of the common "ular" already in use. eventually, it simply became an acceptable way to say it. language is dynamic. it changes all the time. i hear people in scientific circles say nucular all the time, but they dont emphasize the "yoo", they emphasize the "Nuke". Im not saying it should ever have come to be pronounced this way, Im just saying that it has become an acceptable way of saying it.Besides, Jack Bauer uses it. presumambly, one would not question the pronunciation of "leiutenant" as "lef-tenant" today. it's the same basic phenomenon where the use and pronunciation of a word evolves. [/quote']Most of the nuclear and radiation physicists I work with would openly mock someone for using the word 'nucular'. I'd be willing to bet that most chemists would chuckle as well.
