MamaPink
What's the best Biography you have ever read?
Schwa.
This one not only gives you his own life story told by him, but it tells you everything that happened in jazz for the entire era.
MamaPink
I'm asking because I want to get my little cousin a good biography, but the ones I have read are a little too racey for a 13-year-old... or are they? The Miles Davis book might be a good one for him....
bradm
The Miles Davis book might be a good one for him.... It might not. Miles uses foul language a lot, and details his drug use (heroin, cocaine) and abuse of women. is also really good (though it's not structured as a typical "timeline" biography). Booche
Get him Nikki Sixx's new biography, The Heroin Diaries.
Schwa.
ABSOLUTELY not good for a 13 year old.tons of stories about heroin and very bad things.
Ms.Huxtable
It's probably not what you're after, but I really loved Jacques Pepins - The Apprentice, My Life in the Kitchen. But I'm like that.
jayr
What are his interests? I don't think I've read a musician biography that doesn't go into some detail of drug abuse/use etc. Damn musicians! Although, Phil's book does end on a fairly high note. backbacon
is also really good (though it's not structured as a typical "timeline" biography). I really enjoyed this one too.. it does get some too political for my tastes towards the end. I read this one when I was probably about 13, and loved it. I think every Canadian boy should read it:

PalacePrincess
this is a beautiful book, one of my all time favourites. yeah, there's drugs...but he's pretty much associated with drugs period, and not in a good way. it doesn't really glorify them. it's also onsale at amazon right now, though i don't know if you'll get it before christmas at this point. http://www.amazon.ca/Heavier-Than-Heaven-Biography-Cobain/dp/0786884029/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198165075&sr=8-

Velvet
Is That It? by Bob Geldof is fantastic. It shows how a single man can really change things. I recommend it for a 13-year old any day.

bokonon
I'd get your cousin a Che Guevara biography. There are a few to choose from. I really liked Gandhi's biography but it was a long book and would probably intimidate a kid that young. Does Craig Kielburger (I'm not even sure I have that name right, the kid that does all the international charity work) have a biography? That would be a great read for a thirteen year-old. allison
I think 13 year olds generally like reading about people who are ALIVE...reading about dead people kicks in hormonally a bit later, unless said 13 year old is precocious, anemic and/or gets beaten up a lot at school.Into the Wild (the book the movie is based upon) would be a good choice I think.Jon Krakauer's writing is clear, bordering on simple, the pacing is pretty fast, and the subject is really interesting, and doesn't have alot of the taboos like sex and drugs generally associated with gifting kids.Personally..I'd give the kid some Henry Rollins books. bradm
Here's one that's non-musical, and, again, not a usual "timeline" kind of book: "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!": Adventures Of A Curious Character. It's funny, enlightening, sentimental, and completely engaging. (If you've never heard of Richard Feynman, read up on him here.)Aloha,Brad
