Luke I just don't see the hip hop nation(if there is one) as a last vestige of civilization.I think thats ludicrous.

I do think that within hip hop culture there is an approaching crisis, a tipping point that happens cyclically with every so called counterculture.

Counterculture is reactionary(usually).Its spurred by a denouncement of something in popular/mainstream culture,and no matter how devoutly its celebrants hold to the new ideals, the way of doing so always seems to cave to the same old sociological forces that govern the culture they tried to distance from.The counterculture always ends up being assimilated because trying to change the structure of society is very hard=social mores,political trends, etc are more ephemeral.

With hip hop culture-again Im wading in something I dont have too many reference points with-it started as reactionary.A new art form, a new hustle, a way to embrace the marginalized life available, make it there own, speak about it.Except the bulk of the speaking became about the same conspicuous consumption as the culture that did the marginalizing in the first place.It created a new facet to an existing culture, a new avenue of success by just used the scraps of an old one to bring what honor it could to those who deserved better.And like paisley said-its an art form first and foremost.

The crisis in hip hop is how to step away from the hustle and look at what positivity can be brought to the medium, what true voice it has when the obstacles are overcome, when thugism isnt the only available honour, when the power and honour of the hip hop "nation" can be brought on its own terms.

Interestingly a young friend of mine was part of the band that opened for Public Enemy a little while ago at the Docks.Chuck D has taken the band she plays with under mentorship BECAUSE he feels that the true power of hiphop as an expressive medium is largely being lost-so hes throwing his weight behind those artists that espouse social consciousness and a new community.

The only way to impact change in the world today seems to me twofold. One address how you are yourself the source of all conflict in the world. Two make as much money as possible and invest that money in investments you understand the implications of or in a high quality of life for yourself or your family because no one else including our very socialist government is going to provide that for you.
