Pilot Fights Black Snake Stowaway on Plane

Friday, June 02, 2006

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Monty Coles was 3,000 feet in the air when he discovered a stowaway peeking out at him from the plane's instrument panel — a 4 1/2-foot black snake.

Coles had left Charleston earlier for a leisurely flight over the West Virginia countryside last Saturday in his Piper Cherokee and was preparing to land in Gallipolis, Ohio, when the snake revealed itself.

"Nothing in any of the manuals ever described anything like this," the 62-year-old Cross Lanes resident said. But the advice given 25 years earlier from his flight instructor immediately came to mind: "No matter what happens, fly the plane."

An attempt to swat the snake only resulted in it falling to Coles' feet under the rudder pedals. It then darted to the other side of the cockpit.

While maintaining control of the single-engine plane with one hand, Coles grabbed the reptile behind its head with his other.

"There was no way I was letting that thing go. It coiled all around my arm, and its tail grabbed hold of a lever on the floor and started pulling," Coles said.

The next step was to radio for emergency landing clearance.

"They came back and asked what my problem was. I told them I had one hand full of snake and the other hand full of plane. They cleared me in."

After a smooth landing, Coles posed for pictures with the snake, then let it loose.

"That snake resides in Ohio now," he said. "I wasn't about to bring it home. I don't mind snakes, but I sure like to know where they are."

Coles said he was lucky his usual travel companions, his wife and dachshund, were not on the flight.

"If my wife had been in the plane, I wouldn't have a wife, a plane or myself," Coles said. "I don't know what might have happened if Killer had been in the plane, but it sure would have been a lot more exciting."

I work in a bookstore, and was excited to see that this showed up at work today:

That would be Snakes on a Plane, the novelization based on the movie. Find out what happens before you see the movie!

I had a hard time trying to explain to my coworkers why I found the book funny :).

I do believe that is the first time I've heard the word "novelization".....I always did wonder what to call a 'book made from a movie' or 'the book version of a movie.' Absolutely hilarious!!!

I'm pretty sure you can rip through that today on your lunch hour, eh? I for one would enjoy the 'spoiler' of having you scan in the last page, or the last few paragraphs!!!

And for your next party--the board game!

www.cobrasinthecockpit.com

Cobras in the Cockpit is a game based on a fictional movie where YOU play the SNAKES! Your objective: throw the plane into chaos! You will hiss, rattle, squeeze, and bite your way through the plane, earning points for each section you throw into chaos. But other snakes will try to stop you, so watch out!

There are 4 types of snakes: Cobras, Rattlesnakes, Kingsnakes, and Pythons, each one having special abilities that make them unique. Each player chooses a breed of snake to play and then moves their snakes through the plane, trying to scare the passengers and crew. When all sections of the plane have been thrown into chaos, the game is over and the snakes with the most points win.

Beware of the Bad Mother F$%#@! and the Air Marshall! Spook people with snakes on a plate and snakes in the head! But don't forget that snakes don't plan good and snakes can barely see!*

The game comes with a 5 piece board, a deck of 99 cards, 4 snake species cards, 20 snake markers, 10 chaos markers, rulebook, and scoresheet.

Cobras in the Cockpit supports 2-4 players and the average game takes 30-60 minutes.

* actual names of cards; bad grammar intended
